Lady Gaga"s Creative Director Talks Potentially Offensive "Judas" Video
Lady Gaga”s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, almost walked away from the singer”s forthcoming “Judas” video due to it”s heavy use of religious themes. Gibson, who is co-directing the video for the single out April 19, was initially fearful of the direction the video was going.
“I was like, “Listen, I don”t want lightning to strike me!”" Gibson told The Hollywood Reporter. “I believe in the gospel and I”m not going there.”
Gaga, who is known for pushing the envelope with her videos, apparently pushed a little too far before the video”s original concept was reigned in to avoid being offensive.
“It was amazing because to have that conversation about salvation, peace and the search for the truth in a room of non-believers and believers, to me, that was saying God is active in a big way,” Gibson said. “And the place that it came to is surreal.”
Gibson began working with Gaga before she landed her deal with Interscope Records and remembers teaching pop”s reigning queen everything from “how to use the microphone, how to look out into the crowd, [and] how to stay in the zone.”
But just because she”s been there from the very beginning doesn”t mean she wouldn”t have walked away from the “Judas” project if it had, in fact, continued to cross the line.
“We don”t touch on things that we have no right touching upon, but the inspiration and the soul and idea that out of your oppression, your darkness, your Judas, you can come into the marvelous light … We”ve created a new Jerusalem,” she said.
Gibson first rose to fame as Diddy”s choreographer on “Making the Band” and according to the visionary, Gaga will be “dancing her face off” in the video.
