Little Mix vs Military Wives: The race for Xmas No1 heats up

A week after their triumph in the TV talent show, X Factor winners Little Mix have wasted no time installing themselves firmly at the top of the charts with their single Cannonball – but they might not be there long.

Gareth Malone”s choir of military wives are still firm favorites to snare the elusive Christmas number one spot, which will be revealed on the Top of the Pops Christmas special next week.

Little Mix, the first ever girl band to reach an X Factor final, are being taken on by the ladies, who were brought together by a BBC Two series.

Their single Wherever You Are is inspired by letters from their soldier husbands and will raise money for forces” charities.

Sam Stevenson, the choir”s 28-year-old lead singer, is no stranger to trying to halt the X Factor”s chart domination during the festive season.

The rock fan helped shake things up back in 2009 when she bought Rage Against The Machine”s Killing In The Name, which led to that year”s winner, Joe McElderry, being knocked off the top.

"I think we have a good chance of getting to number one, I don”t want to be too complacent, but I don”t want to be too cynical either," she said.

"For us it would be the icing on the cake if we did get to number one."
